Keyword Research - How to Do it For Free!

Keyword research is a vital skill to master if you want to make money online. Many, many people think that they just have to put up a website with a product and people will come running to their site to buy from them. So they get all excited, put up a site... and... nothing.

What they have overlooked is that they have to let people know how to actually get to their site. The way to do that is of course through good keyword research since those are the words that people use to find the sites that they are interested in.

You therefore need to know which keywords or phrases will work for you. If you do not use the proper keywords, no one will even know that your site exists.

One of the best research tools is Google's External Keyword Tool. Go to Google and search for it. The site that you want is usually the first one on the results page. Go to that site and then simply follow the rest of this article for easy keyword research.

Google has recently revamped their service. Personally, I think that the old format is easier to use. After you have entered the capture (the security thingy that proves that you are human), click on 'previous interface' in the upper right corner.

In the box in the middle, enter your keyword or keyword phrase that you want to research. For example you could use dog training, or asthma treatment, whatever relates to your site.

When your keyword list comes up click on the 'choose columns' drop down menu above the list. Select 'hide local search volume'. Then click on the column heading: 'global monthly search volume'. This will reorder the keywords for you, from the most searched to least.

You want to select a 'buyer keyword', what someone with a question or problem would search under. So if your overall subject is rabbits, a good keyword might be "rabbit hutches". If you highlight that phrase and then right click on it, you can then click on the Google choice that is provided, and go to the page that that brings up (in a new window).

At the top of the page, just under the search box, you will see the number of search results. You want that number to generally be below 20,000 competing pages. Over this and there will probably be a lot more competition than you want to deal with.

So you can see here that "rabbits" brings up 83 million pages, so it's way too broad a keyword. On the other hand, "rabbit hutches", with 201,000 results, is getting there. If you try 'pet rabbit illnesses' you will get a very usable result of 19,300.

This shows that the keyword phrase of 'pet rabbit illnesses' could be a good keyword to use in the rabbit niche according to your keyword research.

It sounds complicated, but really it's not. Do a couple of dozen searches, just for fun, and you'll soon be a pro at keyword research. To learn more for FREE please go to [http://www.CreateYourFirstBusinessOnline.com]
